The Historic Napa Mill — also known as the Hatt/Napa Mill — is a landmark 19th-century commercial complex in the heart of downtown Napa's Riverfront District. It is one of the last surviving examples of Napa's late 1800s and early 1900s industrial and commercial center, recognized as a local City of Napa landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, the complex is home to Napa River Inn, shops, restaurants, and event spaces, an excellent example of adaptive reuse of historic buildings.

The Historic Napa Mill is located at 500 Main Street, Napa, CA 94559, right on the banks of the Napa River in downtown Napa's Riverfront District. Napa River Inn is not just close to the mill — it is inside it. The inn occupies the historic Hatt/Napa Mill buildings, so guests are fully immersed in the complex from the moment they arrive.

The mill's origins date to 1882, when Captain Albert Hatt purchased the property at Main and Fifth Streets and began construction. That makes the core buildings well over 140 years old. The Keig family, who took ownership in 1912, added the iconic grain silos in the 1940s — a distinctive feature still visible today.

Captain Albert Hatt broke ground on the property in 1882, after purchasing the land from Napa founder William H. Coombs for just $1. The Hatt Building he constructed served as a warehouse and also featured a second-story skating rink that became a popular social hub for the Napa community. It was the beginning of a legacy that has shaped downtown Napa ever since. You can still see the remnants of the roller rink flooring in the Historic Deluxe rooms.

The mill's riverside location was central to its commercial purpose. In the late 1800s, the Napa River was a key transportation corridor for goods moving through the region. Captain Hatt owned a steamship named after one of his daughters, Amelia, which he used in connection with his warehouse business. The mill served as a receiving and distribution point for commodities flowing in and out of Napa City by water.

The Keig family purchased the Hatt/Napa Mill in 1912 and expanded its use to include storing and selling hay, grains, seeds, coal, and feeds. They also ran an egg candling business on the property. Before 1940, feed ingredients were mixed by hand from sacks; the Keigs modernized operations in the 1940s by adding the silos that still define the mill's skyline today.

The silos were added by the Keig family in the 1940s to modernize the feed milling operation. They remain a defining architectural feature of the Historic Napa Mill and are one of the most photographed elements of the complex. If you're arriving from Main Street, you'll spot them right away.

After more than a decade of careful preservation and restoration efforts, the Hatt/Napa Mill complex was transformed into Napa River Inn and the Historic Napa Mill. The project honored the building's industrial heritage while creating a world-class boutique hotel experience.
